The Shawl Project
Breast Cancer Action Manitoba has a proud history of providing information and support to those impacted by a diagnosis of breast cancer. Since 2009 we have included the giving of shawls to those people recently diagnosed and in treatment.
BCAM Shawls are knit by members of BCAM, other breast cancer groups and the Charleswood Senior Knitters. The pattern came from women’s church groups who knit prayer shawls to give to members of their congregations who were faced with illness. (Click here to download the pattern.)
Knitting is one of the healing arts. Both the knitters and the recipients of the shawls benefit from this project. Knit with love and caring, the shawls represent the positive good wishes of the knitter who feels joy in their creation. The recipient experiences the comfort of not only the shawl itself but the feeling of support and caring shared by the knitter.
The shawls are distributed in Winnipeg by BCAM (bcam_mb@shaw.ca). They are available throughout Manitoba from the Community Contacts of the Manitoba Breast and Women’s Cancer Network.
